This is a concept drawing for a 3D project yet to come. The final work will show the common German myth about the sleeping emperor Barbarossa who is waiting for hundreds of years to awake and rule again.
Frederick I. (Barbarossa), King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor, was one of the main leaders of the Third crusade but happened to drown in a river in anatolia before he could reach Jerusalem.
The picture shows 3 slightly different battle dresses. The character in the middle wears a mid 12th century chain mail with a 12th/13th century surcoat. The coat of arms is a single headed eagle which came into use as imperial symbol in the middle of the 12th century.
The character on the right wears a surcoat with a vertically halved coat of arms. The right side (from the wearer) is the imperial eagle again, the left side shows the lion of the Staufer dynasty as dukes of Swabia. This style is afaik of later age.
The character on the left wears a bendy styled surcoat with just the imperial colors black and gold. His cape bears a sewed-on crucifix which was a typical symbol for crusader knights.

I want the character to wear a historically accurate battle dress plus some royal attributes like a crowned helmet. The helmet is a typical 12th century nasal helmet with a sort of crown attached to it.
